Intellectual Silk Road: Education as the Key to the Future

Within the framework of the global “One Belt — One Road” project, one of its strategic components has been identified as the so-called “Intellectual Silk Road” — a direction focused on the development of international educational cooperation, the training of highly qualified specialists, and the support of gifted youth.

The availability of intellectual potential — young, educated, and enterprising professionals — is recognized as one of the most important factors for the success of the entire initiative.

Establishment of the Alliance: Goals and Participants

To implement this educational component, the University Alliance of the New Silk Road (UANSR) was established in 2015, bringing together leading universities from the countries involved in the project.

At the time of its founding, the Alliance included about 100 universities from 22 countries, and by 2024 this number had grown to 132 universities from 32 countries across all five continents.

Goals of the UANSR

  • Creating a sustainable platform for international cooperation in higher education within the framework of the One Belt — One Road initiative;
  • Supporting academic mobility and student exchange;
  • Developing joint scientific research and knowledge sharing;
  • Improving the quality of education in member countries;
  • Promoting cultural exchange and strengthening friendship among nations;
  • Contributing to the socio-economic development of the Eurasian region.

Key Areas of Activity

  • Development and implementation of student and academic exchange programs;

  • Joint organization of scientific conferences and forums;

  • Creation of analytical and research centers;

  • Coordination of universities’ efforts in economic, political, and humanitarian research.

Connection with the Trans-Caspian Career Olympiad

The Trans-Caspian Career Olympiad serves as an important platform for identifying and supporting talented youth aspiring to study at universities of the Silk Road countries.

The main objective of the Olympiad is to discover and assist promising high school students from the South Caucasus and Central Asia — Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

The Organizing Committee of the Olympiad is actively expanding cooperation with universities of the Alliance, as well as with leading educational institutions in Türkiye, Europe, and the USA.

Organization and Coordination

The UANSR headquarters is located at the Institute of Scientific and Technological Innovation of Western China, which coordinates:

  • educational and research initiatives;
  • exchange and training programs;
  • and the establishment of international analytical centers at partner universities.
